Mile 5 begins with a tranquil section of the course as runners make their way through Berkeley’s residential neighborhoods for a taste of life in this community. Runners pass by Live Oak Park where they may see families playing on the playground in this cozy grove. The site of several community festivals, Live Oak Park offers a range of recreational opportunities, with basketball and tennis courts, a recreation center, and tot and school-age play areas. After a quick stretch past Live Oak Park runners turn around and begin journey to the finish line.
Running back through Berkeley’s restaurant district will come as a refreshing reprieve for runners as this begins a downhill portion of the course that lasts almost until the finish line. Runners drop roughly 100 feet in elevation in this portion of Mile 5, offering an opportunity to increase pace and make up speed.
Mile 5 ends just past the intersection of Shattuck Avenue and Virginia Street in front of the beloved neighborhood restaurant Taste of the Himalayas.
